PHOENIX – Season 4 of The CW’s Supergirl is making TV history.
The show announced during San Diego Comic-Con that 20-year-old transgender activist and actress Nicole Maines is joining the cast. Maines will be playing Nia Nal (Dreamer), making her the first transgender superhero on television.
Previous reports speculated that Nia was a new take on the DC Comics character Nura Nal, but it’s been confirmed that Nia is a completely different person, a distant relative of Nura’s.
In the show, Nia is a reporter who works with Melissa Benoist’s character, Kara (Supergirl). Nia’s journey will be similar to Supergirl’s, as she’ll be fulfilling her superhero destiny.
The announcement comes days after The CW revealed that a Batwoman TV series with a lesbian superhero as the main character was in the works.
Maines said that she likes that her character’s storyline doesn’t revolve around her being trans.
“Nia is so much more than ‘the trans superhero’,” she said. “She is a reporter. She is hopeful. She is good. She is powerful. She is wise. She’s caring. She’s such a good friend. And I want Nia to be so many things before she’s trans.”
