Patrick Stewart in MacbethSir Patrick Stewart’s Tony-nominated performance as the ambitious general Macbeth comes to television 9 p.m. Arizona time Oct. 9 on PBS’ Great Performances.

The West End and Broadway production directed by Rupert Goold was re-imagined for HD cinematic viewing when it was filmed late last year. It maintains the atmosphere and tone of the stage version, relocating the bloody action to a nameless 20th century military state.

The Shakespearean classic Macbeth now has an edgy style reminiscent of the recent film adaptation of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Hamlet, which was presented on Great Performances in April.

Tony Nominee Kate Fleetwood joins the Star Trek: The Next Generation and X-Men star as the coldly scheming Lady Macbeth.
