Doctor Who Series 11 cast: Mandip Gill, Bradley Walsh, Jodie Whittaker, Tosin Cole (BBC)

The BBC has revealed today that Bradley Walsh, Tosin Cole and Mandip Gill are joining the regular cast of Doctor Who for its 11th modern season. They join Jodie Whittaker, who was revealed earlier this year as the first woman to play the title role after the Time Lord regenerates into his — er, her — 13th incarnation.

Who’s that?

Sharon D. Clarke is also joining Doctor Who in what is described as a “returning” role; it’s unclear at this time if that means she’s playing a character we’ve seen before played by someone else (because she has no credits on the series so far), or is simply a recurring character. (It certainly sounds like it means something more than a recurring role.)

Bradley is cast as a character named Graham, Tosin as Ryan and Mandip as Yasmin. Clarke’s mysterious role is not yet named.

About time:

Doctor Who Series 11 to begin in fall of 2018

Also announced on Sunday: Following the Christmas Day special that sees current star Peter Capaldi yield the TARDIS to Whittaker, Series 11 will begin in autumn 2018 with a feature-length premiere that kicks off a 10-week run of 50-minute episodes.

Reaction from the top:

“The new Doctor is going to need new friends. We’re thrilled to welcome Mandip, Tosin and Bradley to the Doctor Who family,” said new head writer and executive producer (aka, “showrunner”) Chris Chibnall in a BBC news release. “They’re three of Britain’s brightest talents and we can’t wait to see them dive into brand new adventures with Jodie’s Doctor. Alongside them, we’re delighted that Sharon D Clarke is also joining the show.”

“I am so excited to share this huge adventure with Mandip, Tosin and Bradley,” Whittaker told the BBC. “It’s a dream team!”

Reaction from Whittaker’s new co-stars:

Bradley Walsh: “I remember watching William Hartnell as the first Doctor. Black and white made it very scary for a youngster like myself. I was petrified but even though I’d watch most of it from behind the sofa through my fingers, I became a fan. I then queued up for ages to get into the Carlton picture house in Watford to watch the great Peter Cushing appear as the Doctor in a full length feature film made in glorious colour. Am I thrilled to be part of this whole ground breaking new dawn for the Doctor?? Oh yes!”

Mandip Gill: “I am over the moon to be joining the Doctor Who family. This is an iconic show with an amazing fanbase and I look forward to everything that brings. Certain roles seem unattainable and this is one of those, so much so I didn’t believe it to be true for the first few weeks. To be working alongside the likes of Jodie, Bradley and my old friend Tosin is thrilling. This show is worlds away from the work I’ve done previously and that’s the part that excites me the most.”

Tosin Cole: “I’m grateful and excited to be a part of this journey with the team. I’m looking forward to jumping in this Doctor Who universe.”

If it sounds like the TARDIS is going to be a little crowded, it’s not the first time: Peter Davison’s Fifth Doctor had three companions at once during the show’s original run in the 1980s, first Adric, Nyssa and Tegan followed by Nyssa, Tegan and Turlough.
