Classic, pre-2005 Doctor Who is coming to Blu-ray for the first time later this year with the release of the British sci-fi series’ 12th original season — fan favorite Tom Baker’s first.
Due for release in the U.K. June 11 and the U.S. June 19 26, according to Amazon, Season 12 features five stories over 20 episodes: “Robot,” “The Ark in Space,” “The Sontaran Experiment,” “Genesis of the Daleks” and “Revenge of the Cybermen.”
Baker’s Doctor is accompanied by spunky journalist Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen) and doddering U.N.I.T. medical doctor Harry Sullivan (Ian Marter) and originally aired from December 1974 to May 1975.
The new classic Doctor Who Blu-ray discs, in addition to the restored and upscaled episodes, will include existing bonus material from the original DVD releases, as well as additional features: a new hourlong interview with Baker; new making-of documentaries for some episodes; optional new special effects for “Revenge of the Cybermen”; the omnibus movie version of “Genesis of the Daleks”; a port of the 1991 VHS release “The Tom Baker Years”; and more clips, interviews and archive material.
Tentative cover art for the $69.99 Blu-ray collection includes the recently revealed new logo for the series that starts this fall with the series’ first female Doctor, Jodie Whittaker.
According to BBC Worldwide, other classic Doctor Who seasons are being prepared for a Blu-ray release in the future.
