Flagstaff’s Lowell Observatory, a National Historic Landmark site that is home to the telescope used to discover Pluto, has laid off three of its 60 employees and cut the work hours of five others.
According to the Arizona Daily Sun newspaper, the nonprofit institution cited among the reasons for the cutbacks the expense of the $44 million Discovery Channel Telescope, which will go into operation next year and will be the fifth largest telescope in the United States.
