The BBC confirmed this weekend what months of rumors have suggested: Doctor Who will film in the U.S. for the first time in its nearly 50-year history.
The sixth season, starring Matt Smith and Karen Gillan, will open with a two-part adventure set on American soil that reunites the time travelers with River Song, the mystery woman from the Doctor’s future played by Alex Kingston.
“The Doctor has visited every weird and wonderful planet you can imagine, so he was bound get round to America eventually!” said lead producer and writer Steven Moffat. “And of course every Doctor Who fan will be jumping up and down and saying he’s been in America before. But not for real, not on location – and not with a story like this one!”
The episode is set in the late 1960s. The Doctor (Smith), Amy (Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill) find themselves on an adventure that begins in a Utah desert and leads them right to the halls of presidential power.
