Star Trek Online still doesn’t have a launch date even after securing a new developer, but a Trek convention this weekend at the Las Vegas Hilton gave fans a glimpse of the gameplay in the long-awaited MMORPG.I’m hopeful STO can leave its troubles behind, since the game’s new developer Cryptic Studios got Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy, to join them at the con to introduce the new trailer, which is said to contain only shots of actual play. It shows both space and planetside exploration, as well as man-to-man combat between a Kingon boarding party and Starfleet officers on the bridge of a Federation starship.
Why would Klingons and Starfleet be at war again? Who knows? But the game is set a generation after the most recent Star Trek movie, Nemesis. According to Cryptic: “Immerse yourself in the future of the Trek universe as it moves into the 25th century: a time of shifting alliances and new discoveries.”
Sounds … fascinating!
One more thing: Cryptic is giving away five lifetime subscriptions to STO (whenever it drops) simply for registering at their site by Aug. 17. Engage!
