The holiday season is known to bring joy to Doctor Who fans with the annual Christmas specials. Last week there was another occasion to celebrate as we learned of the recovery of two missing episodes from the long-running British sci-fi series’ distant past.
Now come yet more juicy tidings from the spirit of Doctor Who present: Co-stars Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill will depart the series sometime during the upcoming seventh season, when the story of married couple Amy Pond and Rory Williams comes to a “heartbreaking end.” That description from lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffatt during a recent press event tied to this year’s Christmas episode, “The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe.”
Moffatt was understandably coy about the circumstances and exact timing of the departure, but he said leading man Matt Smith would be getting a new companion for the Doctor’s travels through space and time.
