Fresh off her character’s death as a Cyberman and rebirth as a sentient liquid in Doctor Who’s Series 10 finale, we learned from Comic-Con that Pearl Mackie will return one more time as Bill Potts on the Doctor Who Christmas special, “Twice Upon a Time.”
The Christmas Day adventure is Peter Capaldi’s last go as the Doctor; next year, a new series will begin starring Jodie Whittaker as the 13th incarnation of the Time Lord — the first woman to hold the role, officially.
Mark Gatiss, the longtime Who writer and Sherlock co-showrunner along with Steven Moffat — who is turning over the TARDIS and studio keys to Chris Chibnall next year — will also appear in the Christmas special, apparently as a World War I British officer referred to, so far, only as the Captain.
“Twice Upon a Time” will also feature David Bradley as the First Doctor (and boy, does he morph perfectly into that role in the trailer?). It’s a role he’s sort-of played before: Bradley played actor William Hartnell in An Adventure in Space and Time, a 2013 docu-drama telling the story of Doctor Who’s unlikely origins that marked the program’s 50th anniversary that year.
