Sci-fi and fantasy at the Oscars: Barely an Academy Award ‘Arrival’

Academy Award nominations for ArrivalSci-fi, fantasy and comic-book adventure received only slight recognition from Tuesday’s Academy Award nominations, as Arrival scored a nod for best picture, director (Denis Villeneuve) and adapted screenplay. The Amy Adams-Jeremy Renner first contact flick also earned nominations for production design, cinematography, sound mixing and editing, and film editing.

Suicide Squad and Star Trek Beyond received makeup and hairstyling nominations.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story earned a nod for visual effects, along with Doctor Strange, The Jungle Book and the animated Kubo and the Two Strings.

Passengers was nominated for production design and original score.

No actors or actresses were nominated for genre roles, although Octavia Spencer was nominated for best supporting actress in Hidden Figures, a true story of the long-overlooked role of African American women in NASA’s technical triumphs. The film also was nominated for best picture and best adapted screenplay.

The 2017 Oscars will be presented Feb. 26.
