Doctor Who: ‘Night of the Doctor’ minisode brings back [REDACTED] – and it’s about time!

The 50th Anniversary features Matt Smith, David Tennant and a mysterious incarnation played by John Hurt. Only one appears in the mini episode, The Night Of The Doctor. But which?

SPOILERS! I’m assuming that if you’ve reached this point in the post, you’ve watched the minisode above. So I’ll proceed with a few observations of this momentous event.

Well. For longtime fans of Doctor Who, and especially of Big Finish Productions’ audio adventures, that was seven minutes in heaven. (Or hell, if you’re a Time Lord.) Paul McGann, back as the Eighth Doctor — and his long-wished-for lost regeneration scene, which now we know dovetails into John Hurt’s mysterious “War Doctor” character. In literally one breath, “The Night of the Doctor” manages to canonize all of McGann’s Big Finish adventures (and since those are tied into so many of the other Doctors’ audio tales, I’d say it makes them canon as well) and pay tribute to the many companions Eight has had over the years.

I’m squeeing so hard right now.

And seriously, Paul McGann is so very GOOD. As bad as many parts of the 1996 TV movie that introduced his take on the character were, none of it owed to him, and he really deserved a full, televised run as the Doctor. At least we have the bookending regeneration scene to go with his genesis, now. Beyond that – Who knows?
