Matt Smith has revealed that he is going to play the leading role in Doctor Who through at least 2014, batting down rumors he would exit during the show’s 50th anniversary celebration next year. (As Topless Robot points out, that means he’ll eclipse predecessor David Tennant in terms of full seasons.)
Smith, the eleventh actor to headline the long-running British sci-fi drama, is currently filming his third series, and the seventh since the show returned to TV in 2005 after its cancellation in 1989.
He told The Sun that showrunner Steven Moffat’s “brilliant” idea for the next full series was a factor in remaining.
