The fans have spoken. The next Barbie shall be a nerd — complete with specs, laptop, smartphone, Bluetooth headset and binary-code print tee. Oh, and a matching laptop bag, natch.
That’s the result of Mattel’s recent popular vote to determine the iconic girls toy’s next profession. Computer Engineer Barbie (and News Anchor Barbie, which won the girls’ vote) will be available soon, but Mattel is taking pre-orders now.
“All the girls who imagine their futures through Barbie will learn that engineers — like girls — are free to explore infinite possibilities, limited only by their imagination,” said Nora Lin, president of the Society of Women Engineers, which consulted on the doll’s design, in a statement for the toymaker.
That’s important and all … but what really matters is that this furthers the geek agenda’s penetration of popular culture, building on the progress made by TV’s The Big Bang Theory.
Soon, all be assimilated …
