Cas Anvar: Martian on the Loose at WonderCon

Pathfinder Infinite
Cas Anvar as Alex Kamal on The Expanse

At WonderCon this weekend, there wasn’t an official presence or programming related to The Expanse on the schedule, but cast member Cas Anvar (Alex Kamal) was at the convention and I got a chance to chat briefly with him about the upcoming Season 4 of The Expanse (coming to Amazon Prime Video later in 2019) and his “Martian on the Loose” book hunt that started this weekend.

The new season will follow the story of the fourth book in the James S. A. Corey novel series, Cibola Burn, which sees the Rocinante crew getting involved with one of the newly settled planets after the opening of the gates at the end of season three.

I asked Cas how much of the book series (which is now up to eight books) he has read.

“I tend to read one book a season,” he said. “I don’t like to get too far ahead. So, I’ll read the book that’s relevant to the season that we’re about to shoot.

“It keeps it fresh in my mind. It gives me a good perspective and I know what’s happening and I’m not surprised by the direction we’re going.”

What was exciting for you in the new season?

“It’s the first time we’re going to get to see the Rocinante crew landfall. We’re going to land on a planet! It was, for me, being down on the planet was really exciting because Alex and Naomi have never been outside on a planet with atmosphere. It’s not a commonplace thing. Just walking out of the ship is a big deal. It was exciting to add that layer to all the other stuff that was going on. ”

With the pickup from Amazon, how has that affected the show going forward?

“We had to get ready fast, so that was hard. We didn’t have a lot of time to write, but we pulled it off. The show itself is going to be a little darker, a little grittier, a little sexier because they don’t have the same restrictions as they have on a cable network and we’re not limited by time. We don’t have to deliver 47 minute shows, we can do 57, 67, whatever tells the story. Otherwise, we’re left to tell the story the way we want to tell it.”

Martian on the Loose!

What else is going on that you wanted to let our readers know about?

“Tell your fans to join me on my social media. I’m doing a real fun campaign called “Martian on the Loose.” It’s a worldwide Expanse book hunt. A treasure hunt. I’m hiding books all over the world.”

Cas’s Twitter handle is @casanvar and the hashtags for the book hunt are #MartianOnTheLoose and #ExpanseBookHunt. Follow his Twitter account and the hashtags for clues and updates on where the books are hidden. You can also win prizes even if you aren’t able to find the physical book.

While waiting for The Expanse Season four, you can also catch Cas voicing Batman villain Ra’s Al Ghul in the upcoming Batman Vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated movie being released May 14 by Warner Bros.
