Lucasfilm has announced that Woody Harrelson is joining the cast of 2018’s Han Solo Star Wars spinoff film.
The untitled “anthology”/“Star Wars Story” movie, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, will also star Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover and Emilia Clarke.
Harrelson’s role has not been announced, but reports for several weeks have suggested he will play a mentor to young Han Solo. Such a character existed, likely in an older form, in early drafts of The Empire Strikes Back.
“We couldn’t be more excited to work with an artist with as much depth and range as Woody,” said the directors in a press release. “His ability to find both humor and pathos, often in the same role, is truly unique. He is also very good at ping pong.”
Ping pong or no, the Han Solo movie is currently scheduled for a May 25, 2018, release.
UPDATE: Harrelson confirms his character is a mentor to Solo.
