Sylvester McCoyFormer Doctor Who star Sylvester McCoy has confirmed that his is in talks for a role in The Hobbit — but it’s not for the titular role of Bilbo Baggins, as many (including myself) have assumed:

“I am being cast in The Hobbit,” he said. “We’re currently in negotiations – there are two of us under consideration. It’s not the Bilbo role, but could be bigger.”

McCoy made the remarks while hosting the Cowal Highland Gathering in Dunoon, Argyll, Scotland.

I’m disappointed the clownish actor won’t be playing Bilbo, but I’m glad his mercurial talents will be involved somehow.

  • I had the same thought. TheOneRing.Net speculates that it’s Radagast the Brown, one of Gandalf’s fellow wizards — but I don’t really see how that would be “bigger.” King of Mirkwood? Thorin Oakenshield? Beorn? They have the same problem, really.
