Country Strong stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Tim McGraw, Garrett Hedlund and Leighton Meester. This country music drama follows Palrow’s character, Kelly Canter, a country music superstar just getting out of rehab and embarking on a music tour to revive her career. The music in the movie is great, and this coming from someone who purposefully avoids country music. Hedlund and Meestser nearly steal the show from Paltrow’s rather unlikeable character and showcase some intelligent acting ability as well as some serious singing. While the music is great, the plot suffers, relying too heavily on music-video-like montages and scenes. Read the full review here.

Season of the Witch is a desperate attempt from Nicolas Cage to make a buck in his effort to pay back the IRS. Starring Cage and Ron Perlman, the movie’s opening scene is promising, but unravels to straight-to-DVD drivel from there. Peppered with ridiculous cliches, unimaginative gore and atonal humor, Season of the Witch fails at almost every level, to the point that audiences will be cheering for the witch to just kill everyone and end the movie more quickly. The one bright point: Claire Foy, who played the titular character with a surprising amount of depth. I just hope this movie doesn’t end her chances at a career. Read the full review here.
