PHOENIX – Rotten Tomatoes is trying to stop trolls in their tracks.
On Monday, the movie review website decided to disable comments made on movies before their actual release.
The news comes after the upcoming Captain Marvel movie received bad ratings prior to the movie’s actual premiere. The trolls primarily targeted Brie Larson’s casting as the lead. Past female-led movies have received similar early criticism on this website.
Reaction to the new decision has been mixed.
In a statement, Rotten Tomatoes explained, “Unfortunately, we have seen an uptick in non-constructive input, sometimes bordering on trolling, which we believe is a disservice to our general readership.”
Prior to the update, users could leave comments on movies before they had been released. It was part of a “Want to See” poll where users could rate how badly they want to see a film or how little they care to see it.
