More than 17 million Americans play darts – it is a sport that is popular in bars and pubs, as well as on a professional level. It is the English style of darts that has taken the world by storm, invented in the 1800s. There are very few movies, however, that have darts as a focus. We’re still sadly waiting for Will Ferrell and Ben Stiller to bring to the big screen a movie that is completely immersed in the world of darts. It may also be a little while before we see Jack Black take on the role as the legendary Phil “The Power” Taylor. But there are still plenty of movies that show what darts is all about – precision, dedication and a sense of camaraderie.
Bullseye – 2005
Billy “Bullseye” Jefferson is on a downer. After losing his father in a tragic accident, he vows that he will step away from his career as a darts phenomenon and never play again. After his wife leaves him, Billy’s brother then connects with his own personal crisis. If they don’t raise some substantial funds, then he will never be able to fulfill his dream of buying a bar. Billy, of course, steps up to the challenge in the only way he knows how – by playing darts. In the hope of winning some substantial prize money, Billy enters a national competition to see if he can be champion. But of course the road to glory is never easy, and Billy’s journey is paved with troubles. Playing darts can cause tennis elbow, and this needs proper care: repetitive strain injuries from darts need support and rest. The last thing that Billy needs is a sports injury to hamper his journey – will he manage to overcome adversity and triumph to save the day?
House of Flying Arrows – 2016
The 2016 documentary movie House of Flying Arrows follows a group of international dart players as they compete in the world championship tournament. What the movie brings to the big screen is the sheer exuberance and showmanship that many of the darts players have. Darts is not only a sport of accuracy; it is also about entertaining the audience. If you have ever visited Lakeside in England for a darts tournament, you will understand the incredible atmosphere of a major darts competition. House of Flying Arrows features the legendary Eric Bristow, Gary Anderson and Michael van Gerwen.
Dartsville – 2007
With the tagline “Everything in life is absolute crap…’cept darts,” it is obvious where the comedy, Dartsville is going. The movie features Mark Riley as Randy, getting ready to play in the prestigious Dartsville County Darts Championship. The young darts prodigy is facing a fierce battle, however, both professionally and personally, when he has to step up against his own father. Written by Tony West, Dartsville is a great little comedy featuring some colorful characters and a little competitive fun.
Darts is an accessible sport for everyone, perfect for playing indoors. Hopefully it won’t be long before the Hollywood big names pick up a major movie about the power of throwing those arrows.
