More Miyazaki magic on the way from Disney

The mastermind behind some of Japan’s greatest animated stories is at it again.

Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo, based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale The Little Mermaid, tells the story of a goldfish’s quest to become human. The movie opens Aug. 14.

The voice cast includes Noah Cyrus, Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Tina Fey, Frankie Jonas, Cloris Leachman, Liam Neeson, Lily Tomlin and Betty White. The film, like all of Miyazaki’s, will be distributed in the U.S. by Disney.

Miyazaki’s Spirited Away won the 2002 Academy Award for best animated feature. His other work is equally deserving: My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, Howl’s Moving Castle … If you have never seen any of these enchanting adventures, you have a lot of catching up to do — but you won’t regret the effort.
