English actor John Hurt has died at the age of 77, after battling cancer for more than a year and a half.

He’s played host to an Alien, been on both sides of dystopian regimes in Nineteen Eighty-Four and V for Vendetta, peddled wands to the wizarding whelps of Harry Potter, given voice to the Great Dragon of TV’s Merlin, made the impossible choice the Doctor couldn’t during the Time War, and brought Indiana Jones together with the son he never knew he had.

And that’s just a small part of his more recent repertoire.

He was an icon, and he will be missed.
