‘The Empire Strikes Back’ — Worst trailer ever for the best movie ever?

I’ve only seen this trailer a few times, and each time it completely throws me. Maybe it’s the presentation. I mean, I know it was, like, forever ago, but the announcer sounds like a super-geeky combination of a pre-pubescent Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill. The voice even seems to change at least once during the trailer.

Compare that to the ultra-hyped trailers for 1999’s Phantom Menace, where the previews turned out to be the best part of the entire movie experience. At least we got to see Meet Joe Black and Wing Commander a lot of times and had a good reason to stay up-to-date with the latest QuickTime downloads. Ah, memories …

By the way, The Empire Strikes Back was just selected to be preserved by the Library of Congress as part of its National Film Registry.
