Doctor Who actress Mary Tamm (Romana I) dies at 62

Mary Tamm in Doctor Who (BBC)The BBC is reporting today that actress Mary Tamm, who created the role of the female Time Lord Romana in Doctor Who, has died. She was 62.

Although her time on Doctor Who only lasted one season, 1978-79’s “Key to Time” story arc, the character she created lived on when Romana “regenerated” into a form played by Lalla Ward, who would go on to marry her costar Tom Baker (pictured with Tamm, left) for a brief time.

Tamm lives on in my video collection and, strangely enough, my DVR from a recent TCM airing of the 1974 Nazi-hunting thriller The Odessa File. I think I’ll go visit her tonight.
