HOLLYWOOD – The billion-dollar blockbuster film Black Panther became Marvel Studios’ first Oscar win. The film earned seven Oscar nominations and took home three awards on Sunday evening.

Melissa McCarthy and Brian Tyree Henry announced the first Black Panther win of the night for Best Costume Design in a Motion Picture. Costume designer Ruth Carter accepted the award with honor and grace.

Carter made history not only for Marvel but as the first black woman to ever win in the Costume Design category.

“Marvel may have created the first black superhero, but through costume design, we turned him into an African king,” Carter said in her speech.

Following their Costume Design win, Black Panther also won an Oscar for Best Production Design in a Motion Picture. Production designer Hannah Beachler and set decorator Jay Hart proudly accepted the award.

Beachler made her own history that night as the first black artist to ever win the Production Design award.

“I am stronger because of Marvel, who gave me the opportunity to do my best, who supported the vision of this film and lifted us up every day,” Beachler stated in her speech.

The excitement did not slow there as Black Panther accepted their third and final win of the evening: Best Score in a Motion Picture. Composer Ludwig Goransson proudly accepted the award.

Black Panther’s success is historical for both Marvel and the black women who accepted the awards. The film stands out after it earned $700 million in the United States and over $1.3 billion worldwide.

Rumor has it director Ryan Coogler would return to direct Black Panther 2 and fans of the film can only hope it is true.
