PHOENIX – Avatar has been dethroned, thanks to Avengers: Endgame. The Marvel Studios sequel surpassed James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi hit this past weekend, earning $2.9 billion in revenue.
The film was first released back in April, holding the biggest global opening title of all time. The re-released version of it, with extended scenes catapulted Avengers: Endgame into new territory, beating out Cameron’s Avatar and claiming the top spot.
In the most unique crossover yet, James Cameron congratulated the Russo Brothers on their monumental win with a post from Twitter. Fans of both movies will be able to recognize the Pandoran creatures embracing Iron Man in the poster.
The feelings were mutual, according to the Russo brothers. They shared a post, thanking Cameron for his inspiration throughout the years. Noting, their movie-making magic would’ve never happened, if Cameron hadn’t paved the way. *sheds tear*
Only time will tell how long the Russo brothers will reign ‘Box-office Kings,’ as Avatar is due to become a four-part sequel starting Dec. 17, 2021. For now, Marvel’s biggest stars are enjoying these newly discovered, historic heights.
