A four-star weekend at the movies

Despite its $170 million budget and aggressive  marketing campaign, TRON: Legacy fell short of the projected weekend box office gross of $47 million with a $43 million haul. It still managed to nab the number one spot, but it’s well below the hoped for $70 million weekend. But don’t let its financial woes fool you; TRON: Legacy is a great film, packed full of the most beautiful effects delivered to audiences in stunning 3D (don’t even bother seeing this movie in 2D). The much-lauded soundtrack is provided by DJ duo Daft Punk and adds a bone-shattering electro-beat to the amazing visuals onscreen. The plot is, unfortunately, overloaded with grandiose ideas that are never fully realized. Touching on issues of religion, censorship, freedom of information and chaos vs. order, TRON: Legacy has a framework for a truly philosophical masterpiece. But, alas, it tries to accomplish too much at once. But never fear, a gorgeous lightcycle race is just around the corner to help you forget about any of the plot flubs. The King’s Speech is the amazing true story about the unique relationship between King George VI and his speech therapist, Lionel Logue. Played by the incredibly talented Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush, respectively, The King’s Speech sheds some light on this oft-overlooked moment in English (and world) history. What elevates the film above typical historical dramas is the wonderful humor employed, crafting the relationship between George and Lionel into something charming, sincere, emotional and comedic. Helena Bonham Carter also stands out as the demure, yet strong-willed Elizabeth, George’s devoted wife. Sadly, the third act steers clear of the humor which made the beginning of the movie so endearing. Nonetheless, The King’s Speech is a solid movie well deserving of its recent wave of Golden Globe nominations. Read the full review here.

The Fighter stars Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Melissa Leo in the true story of “Irish” Mikey Ward, a boxer from inner-city Massachusetts looking for a comeback. Believe the positive buzz about this film; Christian Bale shines as Mikey’s half-brother Dicky, a drug-addled ex-boxer who’s larger-than-life. Amy Adams delivers a fiery performance as Mikey’s girlfriend, Charlene and Melissa Leo plays overbearing mother and manager, Alice, with equal parts empathy and cruelty. This is not your typical sports film, but rather a much deeper, introspective look at an athlete’s relationship struggles. The dazzling cast makes up for the slow pace, and the sincere human emotions are sure to appeal to sports fans and non-sports fans alike. Read the full review here.
