Several news outlets, including Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, are reporting that director Sam Raimi and star Tobey Maguire are close to signing up for more Spider-Man movies. Sony reportedly is looking to shoot Spider-Man 4 and 5 back-to-back next fall and release Spidey 4 in May of 2011. Zodiac writer James Vanderbilt is working on the screenplay.
Raimi had previously said he was ready to walk away after the third film. I guess it’s not that easy to leave a multi-billion-dollar franchise. I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for the man who brought us Evil Dead / Army of Darkness and continues to cast the world’s greatest actor Bruce Campbell in cameos, but the last Spider-Man movie was fairly lackluster. I was looking forward to seeing someone else’s vision of the wall-crawler on the silver screen.
Hopefully, Raimi has something left in the tank for the next couple of films, as the bar on what constitutes a “good comic-book movie” has been raised significantly since we last left Peter Parker and Mary Jane. Shooting two movies at once might allow them to go into some of the deeper storylines that couldn’t be contained in a single film. It’s probably too dark, especially after the last movie, but Kraven’s Last Hunt would be pretty hot as a multi-movie storyline.
