‘Stargate: Resistance’ shooter dated for Feb. 10

sgr_boxartMesa-based video game studio FireSky announced today that it will launch its third-person multiplayer shooter Stargate: Resistance on Feb. 10, just over two months after the title was announced.

The game is based on MGM’s sci-fi franchise that includes the 1994 feature film Stargate and the current Syfy series Stargate Universe, in addition to the past series Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.

The last year was one of ups and downs for FireSky and the game’s developer, Cheyenne Mountain Entnertainment. Their flagship game, the massively multiplayer online roleplaying game Stargate Worlds, has faced crippling delays and financial problems since MGM granted them the Stargate license in 2006. The companies got to celebrate the fact that footage from SGW had a starring role in the Oct. 2 series premiere of Stargate Universe on Syfy, appearing in the early part of the episode, as geeky character Eli Wallace (David Blue) solves a puzzle hidden in the game by Dr. Nicholas Rush (Robert Carlyle), who is looking for a brilliant young mind to unlock the final mystery of the alien Stargate.

But earlier in the year, Cheyenne Mountain and its founder and principal owner, Gary Whiting, were sued by investors who claim misuse of company funds. The company then virtually clammed up about progress on the game, saying more information would be released when there was something new to say, while being candid about the funding struggles.

Switching gears and focusing on the action-oriented Resistance was a way for the company to stay afloat through the recession until Stargate Worlds could be completed and brought to market, as one of the game’s producers told GateWorld’s Darren Sumner when the new game was announced in December.
