Fantasy Flight is reprinting West End’s d6 Star Wars RPG for its 30th anniversary

Star Wars: Roleplaying Game 30th Anniversary Edition

Not that this will be a problem for most Nerdvana readers, but you’d better scrounge up all your six-sided dice. You’re going to need them …

Maybe 5d6.

West End Games’ Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game is one of those RPG systems against which all others invariably get judged. Although the Lucasfilm RPG license has changed hands a few times since it debuted in 1987, the “d6 system’s” power is still revered across the gaming galaxy.

Perhaps more significant, the WEG RPG’s rich assortment of original characters, hardware and vehicles extended deep roots into the vast “Expanded Universe” of novels, comics and animation that still partially exists today, with many references still appearing in Disney’s newer “canonical” Lucasfilm spinoffs. (And why not? Waste not, want not.)

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Star Wars RPG, Fantasy Flight Games — the current license holder — is re-releasing the original book — and them some — in a special edition. Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game 30th Anniversary Edition is due for release in the fourth quarter of this year.

Priced at $59.95, the slipcase set includes the Star Wars RPG core rulebook as well as The Star Wars Sourcebook, an equally influential, early accessory that brought starfighters, capital ships, droids, aliens, weapons and combat vehicles like the AT-AT and AT-ST walkers to the gaming table.

From the official announcement:

“Elements from The Star Wars Sourcebook have since become Star Wars canon, such as the names of the alien races, Twi’lek, Rodian, and Quarren. Timothy Zahn was given the books as reference when he was developing Grand Admiral Thrawn and his Thrawn trilogy. And the rulebook’s chapter on “Designing Adventures” so clearly and effectively deconstructed the particular nature of space opera to which Star Wars belongs that Pablo Hidalgo cites it as inspiration for the writers’ bible he developed for the Lucasfilm Story Group.

“This critical tie between Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game and our current apprecation of everything Star Wars is brought to life in the foreword Pablo Hidalgo wrote for the 30th Anniversary Edition, and it’s one of the few changes between this edition and the original. You’ll also find a few updated photos, pieces of concept art, and advertisements, but they’re all carefully designed to match the book’s original style, including its alternating use of black-and-white and full color.”

If there is anyone in your life who loves roleplaying games or Star Wars, seriously — what better gift idea can you possibly find?
