But there’s never been a DM screen quite this big before.
Sept. 4, from PAX West in Seattle, a live pseudo-celebrity game of Dungeons & Dragons will come to the big screen at select cinemas across the county as the cast of web video sensation Acquisitions Inc. goes on an epic quest against havoc-wreaking Giants, the literal Big Bads of the new D&D adventure “season” that launches Sept. 6, Storm King’s Thunder.
It’s the first time I’m aware of that you’ll be able to watch a live D&D game — and all the hilarity that ensues — on a cinematic scale.
Like many Fathom Events, apart from the main attraction there will be special features — in this case, a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of this unique D&D adventure, and a take-home adventure booklet based on the event. This exclusive 32-page module contains a four-hour adventure that includes tips for new D&D players (“interns” of Acquisitions Inc.) and ties into the Storm King’s storyline.
Acquisitions Inc., along with Geek and Sundry’s highly popular Critical Role and official D&D livestreams on Twitch, have brought tabletop roleplaying games out of the basements and kitchens and more into the public eye than ever before — and no one’s been dragged to their doom by a storm of spectral tentacles through an eldritch portal (yet).
The AI cast features Wizards of the Coast game designer Chris Perkins serving as Dungeon Master for a group of games-media VIPs that has included Penny Arcade’s Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik, actor and author Wil Wheaton, epic fantasy novelist Patrick Rothfuss, PvP cartoonist Scott Kurtz and former G4 host Morgan Webb — a veritable Match Game panel of charismatic RPG nerds!Arizona theaters carrying the PAX D&D game include AMC’s Ahwatukee 24, Cinemark 16 Mesa and Tucson’s Century Park Palace 20. Tickets for these and other locations are on sale now.
Think of this trip to the theater as a recon mission ahead of the next D&D big-screen adventure.
