According to Microsoft, U.S. retailers reported Black Friday weekend sales of the Xbox 360 console were on pace to beat previous years — and outsell the PlayStation 3 by a 3-1 ratio.

Their press release said Xbox 360 sales were up 25 percent from the same period last year. (You know, 2007 … when the day after Thanksgiving was still associated with retailers getting back in the black and not stores running red with blood.)

Microsoft also said its software was performing well, with titles like Gears of War 2, Fable II and Lips popular for the holidays.

“We entered into the Black Friday sales period with cautious optimism, knowing that dollar for dollar, Xbox 360 offers more social entertainment value than any other console on the market,” said Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the company’s Interactive Entertainment Business. “Record Black Friday sales in the U.S., coupled with our existing global install base of 25 million and an online community of more than 14 million Xbox LIVE members, have laid the groundwork for continued global sales momentum in 2009.”

Microsoft says their console sales have surged worldwide since the September price drop, outselling the PS3 week over week across Europe.

PC World says the Nintendo Wii was the top-selling item for Black Friday, leading the eBay search list and recently surpassing the 7 million unit mark.

What will Sony have to say for itself?
