William Ly, a 14-year-old boy from Gilbert, emerged as champion from the Play! Pokémon Trading Card Game State (TCG) Tournament in Mesa on March 19. After a full day of battling many other “trainers,” William placed first in the tournament, earning a top state ranking and a state championship medal. But he’s not done yet: William plans to continue competing for a potential invitation to the 2011 Pokémon World Championships later this year.
Meanwhile, Jason Miller, another Gilbert resident, was recently one of 16 finalists in the GT Academy, a racing competition centered around the Sony PlayStation 3 game Gran Turismo 5. Out of 53,000 registrants they emerged as the top racers from the National Finals Event held at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort on March 22-23. Now, Miller and his fellow finalists get to travel to the UK’s Silverstone racing circuit for a weeklong boot camp in June, when the top driver will represent the U.S. racing with elite race car drivers and competing as part of a pro Nissan racing team.
