The original console war never really ended.
A new Intellvision may be on the horizon, but Atari has been working on a comeback for some time. Now the company is taking pre-orders for the crowdfunded Atari VCS through Indiegogo.
With the VCS Atari is promising a customisable, Linux-based machine that offers both classic home/arcade games through their Atari Vault service and “the latest modern and indie PC titles from a wide variety of independent developers,” in addition to voice control and media streaming services.
The system boats 4K resolution and HDR display support, allows expandable storage and supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB 3 connections.
The console is available in both an Onyx edition ($200 pre-order discount) and a collector’s edition, Atari 2600-inspired wood-accented version ($300); both modern controllers and classic joysticks are available, too.
Don’t expect the VCS anytime soon: The expected availability date is July 2019.
