The makers of the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game have released a free PDF version of their game that is described as fast paced, easy to learn and geared toward children ages 6 and up. The 14-page adventure booklet Heroes of Hesiod is based on Wizards of the Coast’s new children’s novel Monster Slayers by Lukas Ritter.
The release is in response to feedback the company received indicating that D&D players wanted to share their gaming experience with their kids. It emphasizes math, reading and writing skills, cooperation and leadership, problem solving and creative thinking. It requires no previous experience with D&D, and all you need is the PDF, some polyhedral dice and paper and pencils. Depending on the number of monsters the children face, the game can run from 15 minutes to an hour.
