Yesterday, Star Wars Rebels executive producer Dave Filoni tipped us off on Facebook that a trailer for the back half of the show’s second season was inbound — and full of spoilers.
Let’s just say he wasn’t kidding around. Click through at your own peril!
A mentor returns
Last season we saw — or, rather, heard — Yoda guide Ezra though a sort of Jedi trials scenario in an abandoned temple on Lothal, so it’s not really surprising that he’d return in some form, even though he’s in self-imposed exile. He’s clearly wise not to be putting all his eggs in the Skywalker baby basket … What is a bit surprising is his appearance itself; this is a very different-looking Yoda, sort of an interstitial stage between the prequel CGI Fozzie-Yoda and the decrepit Classic Trilogy master. I’m not sure how I feel about it. This is probably going to be one of those divisive things that come up in Star Wars every now and then.
‘Call me … Old Master’
Speaking of which … What’s up with the hooded figure who looks and sounds an awful lot like Darth Maul? His Clone Wars storyline ended abruptly — as did many things about that show, also run by Filoni. It was probably inevitable he’d get more screen time, but is he trying to ensnare Ezra into some devious dark side trap? Probably!
Full circle
Ahsoka vs. Vader! The moment we’ve been waiting for. It’s been clear for a while that she has her suspicions about the Sith Lord’s origins, and now it looks like the former Padawan is finally opening up to her new allies about Anakin Skywalker. Will Ahsoka Tano live to tell all?
Elegant weapon
Oh, and then there’s THIS:
Yes, a Kylo Ren-style lightsaber, although light-side green and more stable-looking. It seems our heroes discover an old Jedi temple. In the run-up to The Force Awakens, we did hear Ren’s weapon described as an ancient design. Is there more connection between Rebels and Episode VII than we thought?
There is another …
This all comes fast on the heels of news earlier this week that a young Princess Leia will be appearing when the series returns from hiatus, and a clip of her no-nonsense first meeting with Ezra and Kanan:
This gets interesting when you remember that Ezra was born on the same day as Leia and Luke. Think about that, and consider that we haven’t really seen Ezra take an interest in girls yet, but he’s at that age …
Star Wars: Rebels Season 2 resumes Jan. 20 on Disney XD.
