The Slenderman started off in 2009 in photographs posted by “Victor Surge” that depict an unnaturally tall and thin faceless man stalking and abducting children. Since then, the Slenderman has blown up in popularity on the internet. He has been the influence for many things, good and bad, from video games and art to attempted murder.

On the good side, Slenderman sparked inspiration for video games, movies, stories, and art. Slenderman has been featured in many video games such as Slender: The Eight Pages and Slender: The Arrival. Most of the Slender games have followed a similar format: the player being in the woods or an abandoned area with only a flashlight while avoiding the Slenderman and collecting objects to progress in the game. This format of gaming has sparked numerous other games in that similar style.

Marble Hornets, a YouTube series, was inspired by the Slenderman. Different movies have also been made with the Slenderman in mind, such as the movie titled Entity. It has even sparked the inspiration for an HBO documentary called Beware the Slenderman.

Many pieces of art and even comics have been using the Slenderman as inspiration. For example, a user by the name of Madame Macabre has created a web comic on Youtube and DeviantArt called “The Seer” which features the Slenderman as just one of many characters in the comic.

However, there has been a bad side to the Slenderman as well. Attempted murders have occurred using the Slenderman as inspiration. For example, a case still going on today is the stabbing of a classmate 19 times by two other classmates who were inspired by Slenderman. They felt stabbing the classmate would please the Slenderman and they had to do it. While the classmate who was stabbed, Payton Leutner, is alive and well today, one of the girls who committed the awful crime, Anissa Weier, attempted to have her original confession thrown out. However, the court wishes to proceed with her confession and has set her trial to Sept. 11, 2017. The other girl who was involved with the stabbing, Morgan Geyser, pleading not guilty due to insanity. This murder inspired the documentary that was mentioned earlier called Beware the Slenderman.

The Slenderman has sparked ideas for many people in the community, whether it be for good or for bad. It is what the person chooses to do with the material that makes the myth either famous or infamous. Due to the stabbing incident, it seems the Slenderman is more infamous and that is what the community first thinks of when they hear of the Slenderman. Either way, the Slenderman has earned itself quite a reputation when it comes to all the different ways its myth has been used.
