The holidays are fast upon us — and nerds have needs. Nerdvana has a few ideas to aid in your selfless quest!

Movies recently released on DVD and Blu-ray make great holiday gifts for the same reasons books do: They’re relatively inexpensive (usually), and they’re easy to pick up at the last minute and drop in a stocking or gift bag. Watching such a gift can also become a part of the holiday celebration itself. Let’s look at few suggestions.

The author received copies of some of the videos below for review.

Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor: What more could a Doctor Who fan want than the recently released DVD and Blu-ray combo pack of the 50th anniversary special, “The Day of the Doctor?” It includes a pair of prequel “minisodes,” including the continuity-saving surprise “The Night of the Doctor.”

Doctor Who: Series 1-7 Limited Edition Blu-ray Giftset: Well, this is what more they could want: The Complete Series 1-7, collecting all seasons since the 2005 relaunch. (Not including The Day of the Doctor and this year’s Christmas special, “The Time of the Doctor.”

PACIFICRIM_BDCOMBO_2DMan of Steel: While Superman fans are keeping a close ear to the ground as rumors fly over sequel superhero casting, get them the first installment which chronicles the fall of Krypton in greater detail than ever before on screen, and all the controversy that follows. Lots of different versions are available at different price points, with some fun special features.

Pacific Rim: What’s better than giant monsters or giant robots? Giant monsters and giant robots beating the crap out of each other, of course. With some interesting special features.

The Dark Knight Trilogy: These films may not fit into the same official continuity as Man of Steel, but that doesn’t mean it’s not deserving of a spot in your collection. There are some really great deals on Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises bundled together for handy gifting. TDKR may have come out on video last December, but this series is still a hot item.
