When it comes to fashion, I’m a little, shall we say, out of my element. But the influence of science fiction on these AP photos from Paris fashion week is unmistakable. Read on for a caption that includes my take on where in the universe the designers got their inspiration for their spring-summer 2011 collections.

Inspiration? Stargate/Doctor Who. I mean, c’mon. That runway dressing is clearly a Stargate, with clock gears. As for the great designer’s own ensemble, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome springs to mind.

Inspiration? Padme Amidala’s pajama party!

Inspiration? Dark Jedi … galoshes?

A creation by Italian fashion designer Riccardo Tisci for Givench (AP Photo/Thibault Camus)

Inspiration? Part luchador, part creepy Cobra Commander-Storm Shadow hybrid.

A creation by Italian designer Stephano Pilati for Yves Saint Laurent (AP Photo/Jacques Brinon)

Inspiration? Revenge of the Nerds/Parker Lewis Can’t Lose/The Sound of Music. I mean, they’re not even trying, are they?

Confused and/or horrified yet? I know I am! As this Associated Press story points out, kink, retro-futurism and Mexican lucha libre wrestling are the watchwords of the season.
