The first-ever NerdvanaCon, in conjunction with downtown Mesa’s August Second Friday block party, is shaping up to be an adventure for the ages as we celebrate five years of blogging about the East Valley geek scene.

We can now reveal the title of the cult movie that will be screened at the Aug. 10 event by The Dr. Diabolic Show and Bookmans Entertainment Exchange The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. The 1984 parody sci-fi flick that’s a VHS cabinet mainstay for brainy types stars Peter Weller, John Lithgow, Jeff Goldblum and Christopher Lloyd, among many others. Banzai (Weller) is the ultimate renaissance man: neurosurgeon, physicist, race-car driver and rock star, whose experiments open a doorway to another dimension that threatens the Earth — but of course he and his think-tank companions/band members are also the only ones who can save it.

Among other activities in the works for NerdvanaCon/Second Friday are contests, live musical guests, technology demos, comic book panels and gaming events. Keep watching Nerdvana (as well as Evermore Nevermore, Second Friday and the East Valley Tribune) for new announcements, and use our contact form to let us know if you would like to be involved! (Note: General vendor inquiries should be directed here.)
