The theme of downtown Mesa’s 2nd Friday art walk for March is the “Spring Wellness Festival,” but that doesn’t mean there won’t be a gaggle of geeky genre goodness going on. In addition to free back massages and yoga classes, make sure you hit up some of the following events:
“Build the Robots” Art Show –
The Rusted Nail Gallery marks its first Anniversary with an art show featuring metal robots, wood robots, resin robots, cardboard robots and vinyl robots of all shapes and sizes. Artists include both out-of-state creators and local favorites like Jordan Thomas and Rusted Halo. Not only will the show have robots, but they will be celebrating with food, drinks, prizes, a live DJ and more.
Midnite Movie Mamacita Poster Art Show –
Lo-Fi Coffee House will be hosting an event showcasing the movie poster collection of Valley icon the Midnite Movie Mamacita (Andrea Beesley).
“I don’t collect many things, but I have a passion for movie posters,” said Andrea. “We will debut the collection on 2nd Friday, which features rare original framed one-sheets from the past 30 years, including a FORBIDDEN ZONE poster from the 1982 film signed by director Richard Elfman, as well a poster from the new cult favorite HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN. I think people will get a kick out of the artwork and they can walk away with one framed and ready to go!”
All the art in the show will be for sale and this is an excellent opportunity to meet & speak geek with Andrea, who is also the Festival Director for the upcoming International Horror & Sci-Fi Film Festival. The posters will be on display at Lo-Fi for the month of March.
Get Simpsonized –
Gotham City Comics & Coffee will be hosting five time Emmy award-winning Simpsons animator Phil Ortiz and local favorite Big Chris Wood as they team-up to turn you into a real life resident of Springfield. Big lines are expected, so show up early and grab a big Burrito Latte (a Gotham specialty) while you wait. The event will carry over to Saturday as well – yes, the real Saturday (not like that fake Saturday that almost got you fired!)
Mesa’s 2nd Fridays in April and May are also promising a wealth of nerdcentric events including the Grand Opening of the Monsterland Bar & Grill on Friday the 13th in April and Sci-Fi Friday in May, the original geek’s night out, with Steampunk Street, the Mesa Zombie Walk and other stupendous surprises.
