Live video platform Twitch, best known for gaming clips but also recently home to marathons of Bob Ross’ Joy of Painting and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, has announced that it will stream more than 500 episodes from Doctor Who’s original 26-season, 1963-89 run.
Starting May 29, the first seven Doctors — William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy — will bounce around space and time as thousands of viewers around the world chat live, no doubt marveling at the very … special special effects and costumes that the beloved British sci-fi series was once known for.
Not a Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith or Peter Capaldi in sight — not here, no-sirree! (You can find them on Amazon Prime Video, the exclusive streaming service home of the current series, which started in 2005.)
The free presentations will come in thrice-daily blocks, and there will be special content introducing and explaining each era of Doctor Who, along with insights from guests like Who screenwriters, fans and other experts — and even a former companion of the Doctor! (Who will it be?)
In addition, viewers who subscribe to the TwitchPresents channel can get exclusive classic Doctor Who-themed emojis as well as enter contests for prizes like a trip to London Comic-Con.
So, synchronize your timepieces to catch classic Doctor Who on Twitch, Monday through Friday starting at 11 a.m. Pacific time, May 29 through July 23, at Twitch.tv/TwitchPresents.
If Doctor Who on Twitch doesn’t sound like your cuppa tea, and you’re looking for a more persistent place to catch classic Who, the series is soon to make its Blu-ray debut with Tom Baker’s first season, part of which is also coming to the big screen — and Britbox is the exclusive streaming home of the most complete collection of original series episodes.)
