Chewbacca from ‘Star Wars’ to help open indoor shooting range

Peter Mayhew — AKA the Wookiee Chewbacca — will be the guest of honor July 3 for the grand opening of Cunningham’s Indoor Shooting Range at Power and Rittenhouse roads in Queen Creek.

The facility, announced late last year during the construction drought as a backup plan of sorts by Mesa contractors Chris Cunningham and Ted Williams, will include 10 shooting lanes with an observation area, classrooms where people of all ages can take gun safety and other classes and a shop to sell guns and ammunition onsite.

Mayhew, a 7-foot-3 Englishman who worked as a hospital porter prior to launching a film career that included “Star Wars,” now lives in Texas as a U.S. citizen and is a regular on the sci-fi convention circuit.

No word yet on whether Mr. Mayhew will engage in any firearms practice — but if any contest should break out, it will be wise to remember the words of C-3PO:

Let the Wookiee win!
