Join us for a Science Fiction TV Dinner with Max Headroom, featuring special guests David H. Guston and Sarah Ventre!

About this Event

A true 1980s pop-culture oddity, Max Headroom is a cyberpunk satire of the 21st century where the world is controlled by a cabal of shadowy, ruthless TV networks (example: “off” switches have been banned on televisions). Our protagonist, Edison Carter, is an investigative journalist working inside the system to expose corruption, with help from his news team, a teenage hacker, and his virtual doppelganger Max Headroom. Max is an early example of a viral, transmedia icon, appearing not just in this series but also as a music video veejay, a late-night talk show host, a pitchman for New Coke, a Commodore 64 video game character, and even as an in-joke reference in Back to the Future Part II.

Join us for a conversation about media consolidation, dystopias, news gathering, and our ever-changing visions of the future with David H. Guston, founding director of ASU’s School for the Future of Innovation in Society, and Sarah Ventre, an award-winning audio journalist, podcaster, and public radio producer.

We’ll have dinner for the first 150 guests.

**Water Bottles**: To cut down on waste and make our events more environmentally friendly, we will no longer offer disposable plastic bottles. Instead, we will have water bottle filling stations available, so please bring your own reusable container! We also ask that you bring a resealable container (like a screw-top bottle, flask, or covered tumbler) to help us avoid spills.

Location: Need help finding the Interdisciplinary Science & Technology Building IV? Here’s a map.

Parking: Parking can be challenging on ASU’s Tempe campus. We recommend that you use the Metro Light Rail to travel to the event, disembarking at the University Drive and Rural Road station. You can also use the Valley Metro bus system. If you’d like to explore options for visitor parking on campus, please visit the ASU Parking and Transit website.

Seating: Seating is first come, first served, and your RSVP does not guarantee a seat. So please arrive early, or at least on time!
