Stephen Perry, a writer for Marvel and Star comics who penned scripts for the 1980s cartoons Thundercats and Silverhawks, has been killed in Florida. The scribe’s van was found abandoned at a Tampa, Fla., hotel in mid-May with a severed body part nearby.

Now Perry’s roommate, 45-year-old James Davis, has been charged with murder; The Associated Press reported that investigators list “drugs and monetary renumerations” among the possible factors in the case.

Perry was never financially successful, and his troubles extended into recent times, when he was diagnosed with cancer. He received aid from the Hero Initiative, a charity that exists to help support comic book creators in need.
