It’s finally here. After years of waiting, the Avengers have assembled. With several stand-alone movies already released, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye and Nick Fury team-up to fight the devious Loki and his alien army of Chitauri.
This isn’t your standard eye-candy blockbuster, folks. Joss Whedon is at the helm. Known mostly for his small screen work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly and Dollhouse, this unsung artist is finally getting the recognition he deserves. Whedon brilliantly ties each of these strong, independent characters into a solid, uncompromising story, giving equal screen-time and care to each hero without sacrificing the overall pace or tone of the movie. This is an undertaking few would have been able to pull off, but with Whedon’s history of successful ensemble projects, not to mention his impeccable sense of character development, emotional resonance, and humor, The Avengers goes off without a hitch.
While an all-out explosion fest is a welcome distraction during summer movie season, The Avengers delivers all that and more. It’s the best Marvel movie to date and kicks off the summer as the movie to beat. Positive reviews and great word-of-mouth will equal massive box office results, to be sure.
