Talk about “boldly going.” Not content with a crossover comic series throwing the Enterprise-D crew of Star Trek: The Next Generation together with the Doctor and his TARDIS against a Borg-Cybermen alliance, IDW Publishing is now teaming up with BOOM! Studios for some real monkey business.
Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock and the rest of the original Enterprise crew will encounter Taylor, Nova and the characters of the original Planet of the Apes film. A release date wasn’t announced.
Brothers Scott and David Tipton, no stranger to Trek comics or crossovers (they were behind “Assimilation2,” the aforementioned TNG/Doctor Who series), will write the new mashup, with interior art and covers from British artist Rachael Stott.
Here’s how David Tipton describes the plot:
“With the Klingons secretly backing a renegade gorilla general in a coup for control of Ape City, Captain Kirk finds himself in the uncomfortable position of having to help out Dr. Zaius’ orangutans. Taylor won’t be happy with that!”
Damn, dirty right he won’t!
It appears the “Original Series” Star Trek crew will be the non-reboot version as played by William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, et al, although this is not specifically stated in the announcement I read apart from “original USS Enterprise crew.” And in case you were wondering, it looks like the miniseries’ subtitle is “The Primate Directive,” and Star Trek appears to get top billing over Planet of the Apes.
As it should, But don’t tell the simians — that may violate the Prime Directive, and make them hopping mad.
