It’s been out on DVD and Blu-ray for a few months, but this Saturday Cartoon Network will air Scooby-Doo! Mask of the Blue Falcon. This is significant not only because Scooby-Doo is awesome, and the mindbending postmodern series Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated recently came to a close, but because the animated movie is set at a comic book convention.
It also continues a recent trend in the Scoobyverse of incorporating other Hanna-Barbera characters that appeared, or might have appeared, in old-school Scooby-Doo adventures. In this case, that’s the Blue Falcon and Dynomutt, who recently appeared in Mystery Incorporated.
The movie’s plot revolves around a “dark” Blue-Falcon reboot announced at the comic convention, to the consternation of fans — and the star — of the original show. You’ll see many nods to Hanna-Barbera history, and pop culture in general. Check it out.
