UPDATED with Jim Steranko and Jamal Igle.
Phoenix Comicon organizers announced the first round of celebrity guests for Phoenix Comicon 2010 on Thursday at an event that also showed off the con’s new digs at the Phoenix Convention Center.
I didn’t make it down there, but here are the highlights from Twitter. More official announcements should come Friday on the official convention Web site.
Star Trek: The Next Generation star Jonathan Frakes (Cmdr. Will Riker) and his wife, Genie Francis (Laura of “Luke and Laura” fame from General Hospital), will attend.
Other guests include 2001: A Space Odyssey co-stars Gary Lockwood and Keir Dullea, New York Times best-selling sci-fi author John Scalzi (Old Man’s War) and “famed costumer and cosplayer Tristen Citrine.”
Lockwood also appeared in the pilot episode of the original Star Trek, “Where No Man Has Gone Before.”
Convention director Matt Solberg added via Twitter that “we have three confirmed comic guests nine months out … they’ll be announced all by midnight.” They include Sterling Gates, current DC writer for Supergirl and Kid Flash; Jamal Igle, current DC artist on Supergirl; and making his first appearance at Phoenix Comicon, legendary Silver Age comic artist Jim Steranko.
Phoenix Comicon 2010 will be May 27-30 at the Phoenix Convention Center. Through 2009 the con was at the Mesa Convention Center, but organizers and guests wanted a bigger venue.
In other convention news, the North American Discworld Convention 2009 is getting under way Friday at the Tempe Mission Palms, with guest of honor Terry Pratchett. You can read more about that here and through the “local convention calendar” links in the sidebar on the right. And don’t forget to submit your events!
