Marvel movie lineup assembles Avengers!

ultimates, ultimates2, ultimate avengers, captain america, thor, iron man, hulk, scarlet witch, hawkeye, quicksilver, wasp, Bryan Hitch

Marvel fans rejoice! There are more super-hero movies coming our way in the next few years, including Iron Man 2 and the long-awaited Avengers. We all knew this was coming after seeing the end of Iron Man, when Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson) shows up to recruit Tony Stark for the “Avengers Initiative”, but we didn’t realize Marvel Studios would deliver so quickly.

IRON MAN 2iron man, Adi Granov, avengers

After smashing box office records and critics’ expectations, Iron Man will get a sequel to be released on April 30, 2010. I’m sure Robert Downey, Jr., John Favreau and the rest of the gang will return to expand Tony Stark’s addictive story…get it, addictive. Hopefully they’ll introduce the Mandarin as the new villain and follow up on all the “ten rings” teases from the first movie.

THORthor by Olivier Coipel, avengers

Next in line, fans will finally get to see Thor, the god of thunder, unleash the power of Mjolnir on the big screen on June 4, 2010. The screenplay is being written by Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend). Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios president, has revealed that most of movie will be set in the Norse realm of Asgard, but not all of it. Also, Thor will make an appearance in Iron Man 2, further setting up The Avengers movie. No word yet on casting or a director (Matthew Vaughn was on board but not anymore).

CAPTAIN AMERICA captain america, ultimates, Bryan Hitch, avengers

The First Avenger: Captain Americawill start the summer blockbuster season off right on May 6, 2011. Watch a scrawny boy named Steve Rodgers transform into America’s greatest super hero with director Nick Cassavetes (Alpha Dog, The Notebook) at the helm. The movie is said to be WWII-era story, not a modern day one, and the film will tie directly into The Avengers movie being released six weeks later. No word yet on Cap casting but Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige says the rumors of Matthew McConaughey starring are untrue.

The Avengers, featuring Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and The Incredible Hulk, will hit theaters sometime in July 2011. Zak Penn (X2, X-Men: The Last Stand, The Incredible Hulk) is handling the script which will most likely involve a major threat to Earth that will cause an unlikely team of super heroes to unite and save the day. An Avengers movie has been talked about for many many years now, much to the frustration of fans like me, but it looks like soon it will be a reality. And with Marvel Studios’ movies so far looking like they’ve borrowed some great ideas from the Ultimate Marvel Universe (like using Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury in Iron Man and dropping Bruce Banner out of a helicopter to make him transform into the Hulk in The Incredible Hulk), The Avengers could gain the title of GREATEST COMIC BOOK MOVIE EVER.

Also worth mentioning is Ant-Man, which is still being developed and doesn’t have a solid release date but is scheduled for 2010. No word yet on whether Ant-Man will join the ranks of The Avengers or just be a stand-alone film, but it would make sense since he has been on the Avengers roster for many years. Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) is writing and directing the movie which he says will not be spoof, but an action-adventure sci-fi film with comedic elements.

Don’t forget to check out the other Marvel films coming soon:

The Incredible Hulk (June 13)

Punisher: War Zone (Dec. 5)

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (May 1, 2009)
