While all the hype for quality summer comic book movies is focused on Iron Man and The Dark Knight, Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy 2: The Golden Army could be the big hit nobody is expecting. Sure we’ve seen the movie poster and teaser trailer and they were OK, but the new trailer reveals the more of what the movie is really about: A fantasy roller coaster ride from one of the most creative directors in Hollywood.

hellboy 2 movie posterOscar-nominated director Guillermo del Toro has learned a lot since writing and directing the first Hellboy movie in 2004. And he certainly showed us by creating one of the best fantasy movies ever made with 2006’s Pan’s Labyrinth, which he also wrote and directed. It seems clear now that only one director could take what is so cool about the Hellboy comic (created by the brilliant Mike Mignola) and make it into a great movie. In Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, del Toro ramps up the the scope, number of different monsters and surely the wisecracks and one liners from our red, horned hero.

This is just the beginning for Guillermo’s rise to superstardom as he is set to direct both of the Hobbit movies (2010 and 2011), Doctor Strange (2010) to be written by Neil Gaiman [sweet!] and a movie based on H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness (2010).

Enough jibba jabba. Check out the sweet trailer for Hellboy 2: The Golden Army below or click here or here (official movie site).

MORE INFO ABOUT THE MOVIE FROM THE STUDIO:

With a signature blend of action, humor and character-based spectacle, the saga of the world’s toughest, kitten-loving hero from Hell continues to unfold in Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. Bigger muscle, badder weapons and more ungodly villains arrive in an epic vision of imagination from Oscar®-nominated director Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy). After an ancient truce existing between humankind and the invisible realm of the fantastic is broken, hell on Earth is ready to erupt. A ruthless leader who treads the world above and the one below defies his bloodline and awakens an unstoppable army of creatures. Now, it’s up to the planet’s toughest, roughest superhero to battle the merciless dictator and his marauders. He may be red. He may be horned. He may be misunderstood. But when you need the job done right, it’s time to call in Hellboy (Ron Perlman). Along with his expanding team in the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense — pyrokinetic girlfriend Liz (Selma Blair), aquatic empath Abe (Doug Jones) and protoplasmic mystic Johann — the BPRD will travel between the surface strata and the unseen magical one, where creatures of fantasy become corporeal. And Hellboy, a creature of two worlds who’s accepted by neither, must choose between the life he knows and an unknown destiny that beckons him.
